It spawned memes, religions and over 122 million chat messages and after 16 days, 7 hours, 45 minutes and 30 seconds, TPP was victorious, defeating the Elite Four and beating Pokemon Red. The kind folk over at Twitch also released a series of stats on this internet phenomenon:
– 1 165 140 different Twitch accounts entered chat commands
– 9 million people overlooked the madness over the course of the journey
– The number of concurrent viewers peaked at over 121 000
– 1+ billion total minutes watched
Oh and if that wasn’t enough, somebody has already started a petition to make March 1st National Helix Day.
I don’t think anybody could have anticipated the success of this social experiment and it will be interesting to see how this affects the future of Twitch and potentially even future game design. The channel is still up, teasing a new adventure that will start in the next couple of days (presumably the next generation of Pokemon).
